We were high school classmates. We had been attracted by each other since the first time we met. However, both of us kept in mind that we should concentrate on our studies. After graduation, we entered the same university and fell in love.
In our college life, we went to class together, studied together and travelled together. We almost shared everything with each other. People around us said that our relation was unbreakable. At the end of my college study, I took my parents’ advice to attend the graduate admission examination. while I was admitted by a top university in Shanghai. And he started his career, striving for our brilliant future.
He entered a fine foreign company in another city. He came to see me once a month, I didn’t feel anything wrong with our love in the first two years of my graduate study. The only problem afflicting us is that we linger on the thought with each other. In the third year, I successfully passed the interview conducted by a well-known foreign company through my persistent effort, and I signed the contract with this company even before graduation. Not long after I started my internship in this company, my boyfriend began to ask me many questions about my job, from the salary, welfare etc. to the information of my colleagues and boss. I sensitively realized his depression and dissatisfaction, but when I advised him to hop to another job in shanghai, he always complained that it was extremely hard for him to foot in Shanghai since he only held the bachelor’s degree. In that case, I considered seeking for a job in our hometown so that we could be together. He was very happy when the first time I told him my plan. Somehow, only after a short time he told me that my plan was unwise since no good job in that small city deserved my Master’s Degree from the top university. I was totally confused—what’s his plan for our future? It was during our disputing that the year flew away.
After I got my master’s degree, he broke up with me. Ironically, the only reason he gave me was that “You are excellent so that you need a better man.” Half a year later, I heard that he married a girl. She was one of his colleagues.
I have no idea what if I had not pursued the higher degree after college, but what I know that it is the diploma that makes him far away from me.
