As decades pass, the role of women in society evolves, then what about society’s vision of female postgraduates? When we proposed the question “what is the first impression in your mind when you think of female postgraduates?” The answers are very different from the people coming from different education backgrounds. Generally speaking, people accepting the same education can have a better understanding than others. Wang Weijun, who is going to receive  the Master’s Degree in school of economics, Fudan University, said:“ I think female postgraduates are not very special, if I choose someone to be my girlfriend, the feeling between us will be most important.” Wang Xun, who graduated from university  with a Bachelor’s Degree. in 2006, is now working in a real-estate company, said “female postgraduates are a little conceited. In my opinion, if I marry to a female postgraduate, I will be very tired.” Sharon Yang, who is in the second year of postgraduate study, has a boyfriend and she thinks it is very important to find such a person. “What a pity if a female postgraduate hasn’t found a man to marry when she enters the society.” said Sharon.

　　Why do people have this kind of preconceived ideas about the female postgraduates? 

　　The origin of the stereotype comes from the misunderstanding of higher education. Pursuing the chance to obtain higher education is just for an ideal life. However, in nowadays China, the population of people with well-educated is not very large. Though the number of well educated female is gradually increasing, it is still very limited. Standing on the top of the academic pyramid is a life which very few people have experienced, so it comes false views.

　　In our focus group, seven female postgraduates all think there is a misunderstanding in the society, and the media should be responsible for it. When we uphold newspaper, turn on the TV, browse the information on the Internet, most reports related to the female postgraduates are negative. When we type the “female postgraduates” into the Baidu search engine , the results are shocking. In the 1.17 million lists, most of them are about sexual repression, the third gender, committing suicide, mental diseases and so on. But in fact, these kinds of bad things could happen in every population group, why do female postgraduates deserve this treatment? Because female postgraduates are not fit the ideal image in the traditional mind, (they spend too much time studying) people need stories to support their own previous ideas, and in order to please the masses, the media provide the stories which appeal to the common taste. 

　　Apart from the stereotype of the female postgraduates, the stereotype of the female image is very deep-rooted. A research shows that1.06% of the ads referring to profession make women the image of housewives, and zero for men

　　Women should take more responsibility on the housework than men, which means education is not very important for a woman to find a good husband.  A female postgraduate will embrace the stereotypes of femininity despite her true self identity and her ideal. A depiction of womanhood pre-determined and frozen in time, even as the social characterizations of women bend, change, and break.

　　In our public forum, there's the much-discussed biological imperative: that a woman's fertility drops dramatically after she turns 35 (a fact we're reminded of almost daily in sensationalist newspaper reports), which places enormous pressure on the search to find a partner. And female postgraduates are on the embarrassing age, if they don’t hurry to find a boyfriend, they will seem to be left-women, which means in other’s view, they have difficulty in finding good men. On the opposite, men can afford to "play the field" for longer because their fertility doesn't decline at quite the same rate (although several studies have shown the quality of sperm deteriorates significantly post-40). 

　　And as to the process of association, people know each other mainly by communication, and talk is very essential in a relationship. No matter which side gets nervous or uncomfortable, the relationship can’t continue. None would like to be considered to be ignorant. When you choose a talk partner, you must have the same sharing. Men like to be gentle, humorous and learned. However, when he faces a well educated woman, he may have pressure, protecting himself by silence. Sharon Yang said when she talked to some guys, they praised her by saying” Your view is really special, the female postgraduate is really different.” But she thinks she just expresses her own opinion, and people don’t need to highlight her degree. 

　　The conception in your mind has decided your choice no matter what the female postgraduates actually are. And the stereotype will be an obstacle for female postgraduates to find their true love.
